LINE’s successful educational program for teaching digital literacy expands from Japan to Thailand
BANGKOK – May 8, 2018 – LINE Corporation and Thailand’s Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) today announced that they have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to conduct educational programs on internet safety in Thailand.
Since April 2014, LINE has been developing digital literacy programs designed to promote internet safety. These materials have been widely utilized at educational institutes around Japan, with 2,500 workshops and lectures held last year alone. LINE Thailand reported on those safety programs to ETDA, which found they could also be relevant for Thailand, so discussions began between LINE and ETDA which led to this agreement.
The original educational materials developed in Japan were translated into Thai and modified for Thai culture. For instance, LINE has developed flash cards on various topics that explore the differences in how people think or feel; instructors can use the cards to encourage students to think about these topics by themselves. The material is in PDF format and can be downloaded from LINE's website for free, along with an instructor's guide for teachers.
Under the MOU, LINE and ETDA will increase their efforts to share information, use Japanese experiences to predict what internet-related social problems may occur in Thailand, and work together to resolve such problems. LINE also hopes to expand this program beyond just targeting children and continue discussions with ETDA to conduct awareness-raising activities for a wide range of people, and possibly carry out research and development into potential internet safety needs in Thailand.
