LINE Becomes First Asian Company to Gain Observer Status with the Global Network Initiative
TOKYO – April 15, 2019 – LINE Corporation ("LINE") announces that starting from April 15, it will join the Global Network Initiative ("GNI") for one year as an observer. Since GNI's establishment in October 2008, many global corporations, associations, and experts supportive of the organization’s activities have become members. Among these, LINE is the first Asian-headquartered company to join.
“GNI Welcomes LINE Corporation as an Observer”
In addition to the LINE messaging app and its over 200 million monthly active users, LINE provides a wide range of mobile apps and services to users worldwide, and is proactively working to safeguard user privacy and strengthen its security. To ensure users can use its services with peace of mind, the company has a rigorous internal policy for protecting user data which is based on regulations from multiple countries and regions, including Japan and Europe.
In gaining a one-year observer status with GNI—an international organization working to promote the protection of online privacy and freedom of expression—LINE will now become involved in and cooperate with the organization’s activities. GNI’s own principles and guidelines are based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and other globally recognized human rights frameworks, and in particular, petitions ICT companies to respect and promote the privacy and freedom of expression of their users. The organization also provides recommendations together with governments and international bodies on regulations and policies on these same issues, as well as holds seminars to further related initiatives. It is expected that LINE will leverage its Asia-based experience in privacy initiatives to contribute to GNI’s activities.
Through various initiatives and measures, LINE will continue striving to safeguard user privacy and bolster the security of its services to ensure a safe and secure experience for its users.
